The Square and Compass is the single most identifiable symbol of Freemasonry. Both instruments are used to teach symbolic lessons. The Square and Compass are often depicted with the letter “G” in the center. Among the most widely accepted interpretation is, “G” stands for God, and is a reminder that God is at the center of Freemasonry. In other interpretations, the letter stands for Geometry, the “noblest of sciences,” and “the basis upon which the superstructure of Freemasonry is erected.”
